Backstory: The Rebel's QueryLeo Neilson's life was forged in the fires of tragedy and conflict, shaping him into a figure of resilience and determination. Born to Spiro Theodoros Neilson and his first wife, Leo's early years were under the shadow of a great love and an impending doom. His mother, a woman of strength and defiance, was a vocal opponent of the high king's cruel regime. Her bravery, however, had a dire cost - she was afflicted with a mana plague, a deliberate act by the high king to silence her dissent.
The mana plague was a slow, consuming death, eating away at the mage's life force. Despite the agony and the customary paths of ending such suffering, Leo's mother chose to endure, to teach and love her son without casting the shadow of a tragic end over his young life. Her resilience left an indelible mark on Leo, shaping his understanding of courage and sacrifice. She passed away when Leo was just eight, leaving him with memories of her strength and the painful awareness of the high king's cruelty. To protect Leo, Spiro hid his parentage and sent him to the army, where he was trained as a soldier but deliberately kept away from further magical training. This decision by his father, meant to safeguard him, sowed seeds of resentment in Leo. He saw it as an act of cowardice, a submission to the whims of a tyrant who had robbed him of his mother. This bitterness was compounded when Spiro remarried and had other children, including a son named Javan. As Javan grew, Leo observed his younger half-brother from a distance, noticing his friendship with the young heir to the throne. This heir despised his father's tyrannical rule, and Leo saw an opportunity. He began to nurture a plan of resistance, using Javan's connection to the heir to instigate a rebellion. However, Javan's reluctance to endorse a civil war clashed with Leo's vision of justice. When Spiro sent Javan away to Ulreich, the magic academy, Leo saw this as another of his father's attempts to avoid confronting the kingdom's issues. Left without Javan's influence, Leo, now a general, persuaded the young heir to wage war against the high king. The conflict that ensued was bloody and relentless, a far cry from the measured justice Leo had once envisioned. The war, initially a crusade for vengeance and justice, turned into a prolonged and devastating conflict. As casualties mounted and the reality of the war's impact became apparent, Leo faced a profound realization. The cost was too high, the losses too great. In a moment of introspection and longing for a different path, he reached out to Javan, his estranged brother, hoping to find a new way forward together, away from the endless cycle of violence and retribution. |
